Having an extra set of hands available really helps in assembly but not absolutely necessary. Raising and lowering the mattress is not the easiest. The pine wood is actually harder than many of the "hardwoods" that are offered out there. (The terms hardwood and softwood don't actually have much to do with actual wood hardness).
Service and delivery comments:
Some confusion on shipping. Crib was in stock and ready to go. Wide dresser was on back order until 11/15/09. Checked website after purchase and dresser was back ordered only until 10/16/09. In a surprise, the dresser unexpectedly arrived with the crib within two weeks of purchase. If you can, buy during when they have the 10% off sale. I bought at 5% off and it went to 10%off within a couple hours of my purchase. There was nothing they would/could do about it.
